100 Saturdays, Minds Like My Own: To My Fellow ACP Colleagues

Ku Psychiatric Clinic /Mi-ryang KU

Today marked the 100th ACP meeting. The paper we discussed today was Heinz Kohut's Self Psychology. As I listened to the presenter speak on Kohut’s concept of twinship transference, I realized that I, too, feel a sense of twinship transference toward my fellow ACP colleagues.

Every other Saturday evening—putting aside the fatigue of daily life, weekend relaxation, and precious time with our beloved families—we gathered in front of our computer screens. With our own families and personal lives to tend to, consistently setting aside weekend evenings was by no means an easy task. Nevertheless, we gathered in this space without fail.

I am reminded of the time I first knocked on the door of this gathering. At the beginning, I felt like a child playing with sand on the shore of a vast, daunting ocean of psychoanalysis. I used to wonder how many times I would have to scoop the water out before the ocean would recede. And today, we have reached the meaningful milestone of our 100th gathering. To me, ACP has become something far greater than merely a space for intellectual pursuit. The number 100 feels like a number that signifies completion. In the Dangun myth, the bear ate garlic for 100 days to be reborn as a human being.

What ACP Means to Me

Self Psychology, founded by Heinz Kohut, teaches us that human beings' most fundamental need is not the discharge of instinctual drives, but warm, empathetic connection with others. A person's self is not an isolated island standing alone; rather, it continuously breathes and grows through the functions of "selfobjects" provided within relationships with others.

Reaching our 100th gathering today, I come to realize anew how rich and complete a space of the Tripolar Self ACP has been for me over the past years.

First, there is the deep idealizing transference toward the training analysts who have served as the pillars of our study group. Kohut explained that just as a child achieves inner calm and stability by merging with an all-powerful, wise parent, adults also internalize life values and ideals by participating in an academic community alongside respected mentors. The profound academic insight and gentle empathetic attitude demonstrated by our training analysts have always served as a reassuring idealizing selfobject for me. Experiencing a connection to their wise, steadfast presence—answering any question clearly and effortlessly while serving as role models as psychoanalysts—allowed me to firmly establish my own ideal axis as a aspiring psychoanalyst without wavering. The training analysts were genuinely warm despite their serene composure, and remarkably strong beneath their gentleness.

Second, there is the pure twinship transference I felt toward my fellow ACP colleagues who shared every other Saturday evening with me. In his later theory, Kohut emphasized that the experience of "alikeness"—confirming similarity with others—bestows a fundamental sense of belonging and connection within a community. Leaving behind the sweet rest of weekend evenings to light up our Zoom screens purely out of academic passion for psychoanalysis, meeting my colleagues and listening to their stories gave me a profound sense of relief—a reassurance that even in a reality where materialism often takes precedence, there exist others who feel, think, and pursue the same values as I do.

“Ah, they share the same thoughts about psychoanalysis as I do.”

“There are people who strive so deeply to understand the human mind.”

Not only the passion for psychoanalysis expressed between the lines of the classic texts by overseas scholars, but also the deep longing for psychoanalytic understanding shared by my fellow ACP colleagues served as the most precious twinship selfobject holding me up so that I never felt alone. Through psychoanalysis, we were sharing the same values and desire to comprehend humanity.

Third, I recall the mirroring transference that bloomed at every single moment of our gatherings. Just as an infant confirms their worth by seeing the shining light reflected in their caregiver's eyes, the sincere listening and warm affirmation given to each presentation in ACP served as a solid mirror reflecting everyone's self-esteem and academic agency.

Because the wisdom of our training analysts, the sense of unity among colleagues, and the mirror responses affirming one another's existence came together in harmony, ACP was able to help us cultivate a "cohesive, solid, and vigorous self"—as Kohut described it—throughout these past 100 gatherings.

The Zoom screens on Saturday nights were never cold monitors. Beyond them existed a warm, selfobject space where wisdom flowed, empathy was exchanged, and our selves were strengthened together.

I bow my head in deep gratitude and respect to all the teachers and colleagues who built these 100 Saturday nights together.

My mind, which felt like a child on the beach when I first started ACP, now feels like a twenty-year-old youth passing through adolescence and standing on the threshold of independence. Whenever I face a new developmental stage, fear still creeps in first; yet, knowing that there are ACP colleagues who always offer warm encouragement gives me courage and excitement.

In our upcoming 200th gathering—and on the new voyages beyond—it is my hope that ACP continues to be a precious selfobject of growth for each and every one of us.

Thank you.
