My Connection to the Flasher
My Connection to the Flasher
Ji-Sun Yang
I love Yun Dong-ju.
In Rilke’s poetry,
he saw his own solitude.
Rilke, in Salomé,
sensed a free spirit.
To Nietzsche,
she was a philosophical temptation.
To Freud, Salomé was
a dream beyond interpretation.
Princess Marie Bonaparte
was captivated by Freud’s theories,
and her royal lineage
reached all the way back to Napoleon.
Amid this intricate chain
of love and understanding,
one day, a flasher appeared
and cried, “Ta-da!”
Marie widened her eyes
and asked,
“Shall we try psychoanalysis?”
Startled, the flasher
clutched his coat shut
and fled.
I shake my head and think,
“I love Yun Dong-ju and Rilke,
but my connection to the flasher
is not one I particularly welcome.”
Princess Marie Bonaparte was Napoleon’s great-grandniece. She helped Sigmund Freud escape the Nazi regime and find refuge in England, and she generously provided financial support to numerous psychoanalysts.
It is said that she once encountered a flasher. Rather than reacting with shock or fear, she calmly suggested that he undergo psychoanalysis. The flasher, apparently more startled by her response than she was by his appearance, promptly ran away.
Among her major scholarly contributions was a psychoanalytic study of the life and works of Edgar Allan Poe.
Psychoanalysis and literature share a profound affinity in their exploration of the conflicts inherent in human life. Marie Bonaparte was a pioneering figure in the study of this intersection between literature and psychoanalysis.
She helped save Freud and his family, contributed greatly to the dissemination of psychoanalysis, and even had the remarkable composure to recommend psychoanalysis to a flasher without the slightest hesitation.
I deeply admire and love this extraordinary French writer and psychoanalyst.
